Light Up

When Jack got called down to the lab during his ‘inspection tour’ to activate a piece of Ancient tech, it turned out to be some kind of doohickey that lit up a brilliant blue at his touch. It was actually almost interesting— until he looked up and was completely distracted by the look on Sam’s face.

It was less scientific curiosity and more pure unabashed delight, the look she had when she had a new doohickey to play with that wasn’t in danger of blowing up, or that they needed to use to keep them from blowing up. He hadn’t seen that look very often, what with the Ori and all, and Jack couldn’t help grinning broadly at her.

He’d heard other airmen with the ATA gene call this ‘light-switch duty’, being grabbed by the scientists to activate Ancient stuff, but Jack wasn’t about to complain when this particular scientist grabbed him. In fact, she could grab him whenever she wanted.

“I really appreciate your help,” said Sam— she still wouldn’t call him ‘Jack’ while they were on duty, but she’d dropped the ‘sir’ and that was a start.

“The pleasure is all mine, Carter,” he assured her. “You saved me from having to sit through one of Daniel’s lectures.”

She frowned. “You told me you were free this afternoon.”

“And I am. Free from having to hear about the pottery-making methods of the people of PX-whatever.”

She tried to keep frowning at him, but her smile was quickly gaining ground. “Jack…”

His grin broadened— and the Ancient doohickey under his hands glowed suddenly brighter.

“What did you touch?” Sam demanded.

“I didn’t touch anything!” Jack protested. “Except where you told me.”

“What were you thinking?” she asked, turning to type something onto her laptop.

“Um…” He checked to make sure the lab was empty. “I was thinking about how much I love when you say my name.”

She was facing the other way, but he saw the blush when it reached her ears. “Then,” she said, “somehow, this device is responding to your thoughts, or maybe just your emotions. We had known that there was a mental component to interfacing with the Ancient technology, how some things respond simply to the touch of a gene-carrier, and how some require mental ‘instructions’, but we’ve never found one that has an emotional component— Now what?”

The thing had glowed brighter again.

Jack grinned. “You’re really hot when you talk science, Carter,” he said.

She shook her head, still blushing. “Jack O’Neill, you are a strange man.”

“Yes, but I’m your strange man,” he said, letting go of the device to come around the work bench and stand at her shoulder. “C’mon, Carter, let’s take this experiment someplace a little more private.”

Sam grinned and leaned against his side. “Okay.”

Behind them, the Ancient device sparked brilliantly.

Jack glanced over at it and sighed, but Sam was still grinning. “Later,” she said, and caught his hand, leading them out of the lab.

Time for Plan B
It wasn't until the next day that Jack realized what trouble he was in. Walter handed him the sheet showing his scheduled meetings and appointments for the day. It would be his last at the SGC for this visit. He'd spend the weekend with Sam and then his jet would whisk him back to D.C. late on Sunday. It was one of the perks of being a general, that jet, although it sounded nicer before he realized that he could use the jet when he needed it, but they wouldn't let him fly it. Apparently some junior officer would be twiddling his thumbs just eating a hole in the Air Force budget if he couldn't ferry generals around. Who knew.

With a bit of a wrench, Jack drew his mind back to the disaster at hand. He'd forgotten that the weekly Tech Review was on Friday. The various scientific department heads and the team leaders, as well as the commanding general (and, it seemed, the visiting general) would sit through briefings on this weeks tech that was due to be shipped out to Groom Lake. It was important for people on the front line to know what alien tech was available and what it could do, in case it might be needed in the future. It has always seemed like a good idea to Jack before. Besides, it gave him a chance to stare at Sam with impunity, while she spouted technobabble. Sam spouting technobabble was soooo hot.

And therein lay the problem. That Ancient doohickey would be one of the objects presented. Sam would be presenting it. She would explain what it would do. She had a full ten minute spiel on the powersupply that she was really passionate about. He knew, because last night she'd told him about it, and that had led to...

Jack smiled.

Walter happened to glance up at the general at that moment, and catching a glimpse, he goggled for a moment, then swiftly found something fascinating to stare at in the color-coded lines on the floor. He blushed. There were times that being-able-to-read-people thing that ran in the Harrington line was a mite awkward.

Again Jack dragged his mind from the pleasant place it had been, to the dangers of the day. If he had to listen to Sam technobabble passionately about the thing, if people knew what it did... This was going to be bad. He needed a plan.

When the meeting finally did convene, Jack grabbed a seat in the back of the auditorium. Usually, he treasured a general's perk of a front seat, because the view from down front of Carter's perky-- sooo not going there now. He wanted to be in the back, so he insisted it was Hank's show and took a seat in the nosebleed section.

Daniel kept giving him dark looks during his own presentations, because he suspected that Jack might be sleeping. He wasn't... much.

Finally, at the end, the climax as it were - you're going to a very special hell for that one, O'Neill! - it was Sam's turn. The device, which had barely been emitting a single watt, suddenly perked up and started glowing, to the initial slight alarm of the audience, until she started to explain the function of the machine. That part, and the danger of exposure that it represented, cooled Jack's ardor somewhat, and the glow dulled. It was a temporary setback. Soon, Sam launched into her bit about the power supply, and her gestures got broader, her eyes sparkled, and she could not suppress a grin of sheer delight. The light became noticeably brighter. A few heads swiveled to glance at Jack. Time to act.

"Daniel!" he growled, doing his best to sound jealous, and not a little shocked.

Daniel's flustered and earnest protestations of innocence, combined with his high coloring made him look as guilty as sin, just as Jack had intended.

Sam looked from Daniel, still stammering and waving his arms about (greatly imperiling his seatmates) to Jack, who was doing his unconvincing best to look outraged and innocent himself, and she could not help herself. She laughed aloud.

The glow from the device was blinding.

D'oh! Busted!
